Sydney taxi fares follow a regulated structure set by the NSW Government, comprising four components. Every trip starts with a flag fall (hiring charge), which applies the moment your trip begins. From there, the fare increases based on distance traveled while the vehicle is moving at normal road speed, and switches to a time-based waiting rate when the taxi slows below approximately 26 km/h - such as in traffic or at lights. Finally, any applicable tolls and the NSW Passenger Service Levy are added to the total. This calculator applies all four components automatically based on your specific route.
Sydney taxi rates change depending on when you travel. Day rate applies from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm and is the standard regulated rate. Night rate applies from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am and uses a higher per-kilometer rate to reflect overnight operating costs. Peak hire adds a further surcharge specifically for late-night Friday and Saturday trips and the night before a public holiday, on top of the standard night rate.
